 H.R. 5534,  Makes immunosuppressive drug coverage available to  all kidney transplant patients and removes the 36-month limit for  Medicare coverage.

During recent discussions on drug pricing legislation, House leadership  decided to use some of the potential savings to pay for some of our  priorities. One such provision would provide all dialysis patients with  access to Medigap—a supplemental insurance plan which helps patients pay  for the expenses not covered by Medicare. This priority was originally  included in the Chronic Kidney Disease Improvement in Research and  Treatment Act (S. 1676/ H.R. 3912) or “Kidney Bill.

 Surgeons at NYU Langone Health have transplanted a genetically engineered  pig kidney that continues to function well after 32 days in a man  declared dead by neurologic criteria and maintained with a beating heart  on ventilator support. This represents the longest period that a  gene-edited pig kidney has functioned in a human, and the latest step  toward the advent of an alternate, sustainable supply of organs for  transplant.  SEE VIDEO BELOW
